New SEC chair to CPAs: ‘Back to basics’
FASB on Monday released its 2026 taxonomies.
According to a news release, the SEC is expected to accept as final early next year the 2026 GAAP Financial Reporting Taxonomy (GRT), the 2026 SEC Reporting Taxonomy (SRT), and the 2026 GAAP Employee Benefit Plan Taxonomy (EBPT). Questions about using FASB taxonomies and creating and submitting XBRL-tagged interactive data files in compliance with SEC rules should be directed to the SEC, the news release said. SEC details and guidance are available at the SEC’s Office of Structured Disclosure.
The documents that comprise the taxonomies can be accessed via FASB’s taxonomies webpage or individually at the following links:
- 2026 GRT (including the 2026 EBPT): Contains updates for FASB accounting standards published in 2025 before Dec. 1, 2025, and other recommended improvements.
- 2026 SRT: Contains improvements for elements whose underlying recognition and measurement are not specified by GAAP but are commonly used by GAAP filers and for SEC schedules.
- 2026 DQC Rules Taxonomy (DQCRT): Uniquely structured from the typical design of XBRL taxonomies because it is narrowly focused on conveying the XBRL US Data Quality Committee’s (DQC’s) validation rules — predominantly for regulator use — but it is up to the discretion of the regulator to decide which rules to adopt for validation. The DQCRT contains a subset of the DQC rules.
- 2026 GAAP Meta Model Relationships Taxonomy (MMT): Assists preparers in identifying the proper elements for tagging their filings, assists data users in the consumption of data with additional relationship information, and assists in writing business rules that leverage additional relationship information to help with the proper element selection and identification.
