The IRS announced that its new online preparer tax identification number (PTIN) registration site will undergo system maintenance this weekend and be unavailable for use. The Service estimates that the site will be taken down at approximately 8 a.m. EDT Saturday, Oct. 9, and will remain unavailable until approximately 8 a.m. EDT Tuesday, Oct. 12.
The PTIN registration system was activated on Sept. 28. All paid tax return preparers (including CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents) must apply for and obtain a PTIN—even if they already have one—before preparing any federal tax returns in 2011.
