CPAs awarded for outstanding service in government

The AICPA presented three CPAs with Outstanding CPA in Government Awards.

The Outstanding CPA in Government Career Contribution Award recognizes significant contributions to the CPA profession through government service at the local, state, or federal level over a candidate’s career. Jan Sylvis, of Franklin, Tenn., received the award for her work at the federal, state, and local levels. She was a GASB board member for 10 years, serving as vice chair for 2½ years. She also worked 19 years as the State of Tennessee Chief of Accounts, and she has served in various other audit and internal audit roles within Tennessee state government.

The Outstanding CPA in Government Impact Awards recognize recent significant contributions of CPAs to the efficiency, effectiveness, or innovative service delivery of their local, state, or federal employer organizations.

Gloria Jarmon, of Bowie, Md., received the federal level award. As deputy inspector general for Audit Services, she leads more than 600 auditors, analysts, and staff members in conducting independent audits of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Timothy M. O’Brien of Denver received the local level award. He currently works as auditor of the City and County of Denver. Also, in his 11 years in Colorado’s top auditing job he helped establish a program that reunited residents with almost $400 million of lost or forgotten assets.
