CPAs advocate in Washington on profession’s behalf

CPAs from around the country recently visited Capitol Hill to advocate on issues including tax code simplification and IRS service enhancements as part of the spring meeting of the AICPA’s governing Council.

The four primary areas of focus for the Hill visits by Council members were tax reform, IRS modernization, and garnering support for H.Con.Res.8, a resolution related to the fiscal state of the nation, and for mobile workforce legislation.

Options for getting your voice heard include calling the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 to connect with your lawmakers or asking a member of your legislative delegation for an in-person meeting. “Members of Congress are always looking to hear from local business leaders,” advised Kate Kiley, a director with the AICPA Congressional & Political Affairs team. “Especially with some of the considerable financial market and tax issues facing Congress, how proposed policy would impact CPAs is welcomed intelligence for a member of Congress.”

And advocacy is still possible without a trip to Washington. Other options include visiting an official at a district office or contacting her or him via email, phone, or letter.
