Starkman receives Institute’s highest award for tax
Jay Starkman received the 2011 Arthur J. Dixon Memorial Award, the highest award given by the accounting profession in the area of taxation.
The annual award, given by the AICPA’s Tax Division, honors Arthur J. Dixon, a CPA known for his outstanding record of service to the tax profession and the AICPA Tax Division. The 2011 award was presented at the division’s meeting in Washington by David Lifson, former chair of the AICPA Tax Executive Committee and a previous Dixon award recipient.
Starkman, author of The Sex of a Hippopotamus: A Unique History of Taxes and Accounting, has helped simplify for readers the topic of U.S. taxes.
He began his career in New York with Price Waterhouse and Touche Ross and as the comptroller of a commercial finance company. Then he moved to Atlanta to work with Arthur Young. In 1979, he started his own firm in Atlanta, where he still practices.
Starkman has been a volunteer leader for the AICPA for more than 25 years, chairing the Tax Simplification Committee, the Member Tax Practice Improvement Committee and the Tax Court Practice by CPAs Task Force. He has also served as a member of several other AICPA tax committees and has been an active volunteer in the Georgia Society of CPAs.
