Purcell Earns Highest Award in Taxation
Thomas J. Purcell III received the 2010 Arthur J. Dixon Memorial Award, the highest award given by the profession in the area of taxation.
The award was presented by Patricia Thompson, chair of the AICPA Tax Executive Committee, at the AICPA’s Fall Tax Division Meeting in Washington.
Purcell is professor of accounting and professor of law at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., where he has been on the faculty since 1979. Prior to that, he was a tax consultant with the Omaha office of Touche Ross & Co.
Purcell has been a volunteer leader for the Institute for more than 20 years and is a former chair of the AICPA Tax Executive Committee. Currently, he chairs the AICPA’s Energy Tax Policy Task Force and is a member of the Tax Practice Responsibilities Committee. He has served on other Tax Division committees and task forces, including the Tax Accounting Committee and the Tax Legislation and Policy Committee. He has also served on the AICPA Pre-certification Education Executive Committee and the AICPA Strategic Planning Committee, and as a member of the Institute’s governing Council.
He is a longtime member of the editorial board of The Tax Adviser and is the author of a book, training manuals and articles published in academic and professional journals.
Purcell also volunteers with the Nebraska Society of CPAs, serving as chairman of the board in 1997 and 1998. He has also served as a member of the board of trustees of the foundation of the Nebraska society.
