Dwyer Recognized for Commitment to Community
Karen Mayer Dwyer received the Institute’s 2009 Public Service Award.
The annual award recognizes AICPA members who have made significant contributions to their communities. Olivia F. Kirtley, chair of the AICPA’s Awards Committee, presented the award at the fall meeting of the Institute’s governing Council.
Dwyer is a dedicated supporter of the charter school movement. Following Hurricane Katrina, she helped rebuild the International School of Louisiana by addressing state and local government officials, and working with school administrators and parents. She worked to secure a new facility and to address budget concerns. Her efforts enabled the school to be the first Orleans Parish-based public charter school to reopen after the hurricane. She was also instrumental in creating a new charter school, the International High School of New Orleans, the first language immersion high school in Louisiana to offer both French and Spanish immersion programs and an International Business Program.
Dwyer also serves on the board of A Child’s Wish of Greater New Orleans, which grants wishes to children between the ages of 2 and 18 in Louisiana who have life-threatening or catastrophic illnesses.
She is the owner of Karen Mayer Dwyer CPA, in Metairie, La.
