Q: Back in the old days—that is, when I was still using XP—I downloaded a neat freeware utility from Microsoft that let me tweak my computer’s settings in multiple ways. Is there anything like that for Windows 7?
A: Yes, it’s called the Ultimate Windows Tweaker, and it works in Windows 7 and Vista, and it’s free. UWT is packed with more than 150 computer settings that not only can make your system faster, more stable and more secure, but also allow you to adjust the way it looks.
For example, you can remove those checkmarks on shortcut icons and add small check boxes next to files in Windows Explorer so you can easily select multiple files for copying, moving or deleting without holding down the Ctrl button. It provides an icon to create a Checkpoint for System Restore so, if your computer misbehaves, you can return it to a time when it worked correctly. To download the program, click here.
