Laptop protection : Although LoJack won’t protect your laptop from being stolen, it can help retrieve it. When you install LoJack software it is programmed to hide in the laptop’s memory. When someone turns on the computer without also entering a code, LoJack silently goes into the detective mode. Then, when the user connects to a network, the software surreptitiously dials an 800 number and silently broadcasts its location, alerting the police. LoJack costs $50 for one year or $100 for three years. Go to www.lojackforlaptops.com for more information.
Of course, if the thief downloads your valuable data and finds ways to profit from them before connecting to a network, the use of LoJack is like closing the barn door after the horses have bolted. It hardly helps if you’ve retrieved your computer and the thief is arrested. So the questions you should be addressing are: Do you regularly encrypt sensitive data, and do you back up files in another location?
