Make Excel Comments Less Intrusive

In December 2003 we ran a brief item on adding comments to Excel cells and showed how to get rid of those little red triangles that clutter the worksheet. Pam Luedtke, a CPA from Middleton, Wisconsin, suggested another way: With your cursor in the cell in which you want to attach a comment, click on Data and Validation , bringing up the Data Validation box (see screenshot below).

Type your message under Input message and click on OK . The message next to the cell appears only when your cursor is in the cell.
Below is a comparison of the two methods. On the left is the Validation method; on the right is the conventional Insert Comment method.
