Harvey Gaffen received the Institute’s Year 2000 National Public Service Award at the spring council meeting. The distinction recognized Gaffen for his outstanding achievements in support of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research and patient services.
After founding in 1977 the Les Turner ALS Foundation—named for his brother-in-law, a victim of the disease—Gaffen developed it into the largest, independent, publicly supported ALS organization in the nation, raising more than $14 million in funding.
