Since I am a student who soon will be entering the accounting profession, “Toward an Equal Future” ( JofA, June99, page 71) addressed a topic of particular interest to me.
I believe women in the accounting field need to be aware of what opportunities are there for them, and how they can establish the best professional careers possible. The article helped me to realize that more career opportunities are now available to women, that accounting firms have adopted more family-friendly policies and that women are being considered for their abilities and what they can bring to a business, rather than on the basis of their gender.
I believe equality is the key in the workplace today—we all should get equal opportunities for advancement and jobs. However, my classmates and I wonder how long it will take for women to be considered equal to, or to acquire as many high-ranking positions as, men.
