Illinois Accountant Aces May Exam

Heather L. Hollingsworth Tryon won the Elijah Watt Sells gold medal award for making the highest grade on all four sections of the May 1999 Uniform CPA Examination. Tryon, who graduated magna cum laude from Indiana State University with a degree in accounting, currently works as a staff accountant with Clifton Gunderson LLC in her hometown of Danville, Illinois.

Peter A. Prescott of Sugar Land, Texas, earned the silver medal for the second highest grade on the May exam. He is a tax specialist in the Houston office of KPMG LLP.

Hyun Kyung Kim of Seoul, Korea, won the bronze medal for the third highest score on the examination. Kim plans to work for Samil Accounting Corp., the Korean office of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

New Q&As on Software Revenue Recognition

The AICPA has released another set of technical questions and answers (Q&As) on Statement of Position (SOP) 97-2, Software Revenue Recognition. The Q&As are available on the Institute’s Web site ( www.aicpa.org/members/div/acctstd/general/othitem.htm ). A print version will be included in the next edition of the AICPA’s Technical Practice Aids, which will be available this summer.

AICPA Names Outstanding CPA in Government

Edward J. Mazur, vice president for administration and finance at Virginia State University, was named the 1999 Outstanding CPA in Government. Beryl Davis, chairwoman of the AICPA members in government committee, presented the award to Mazur at the 16th annual National Government Accounting and Auditing Update Conference in Washington, D.C.

The award recognizes CPAs in government who have made significant contributions to the increased efficiency and effectiveness of government organizations and to the growth and enhancement of the profession.

Under Mazur’s guidance, VSU received an unqualified opinion on its audited financial statements for the past four years. He also enhanced the university’s management reporting; privatized its computer, dining and bookstore services; reorganized three major financial and administrative areas; and arranged $12 million in financing for renovation projects.

Mazur’s former positions include an appointment by President Bush as the federal government’s first comptroller. In that role, Mazur implemented the framework that allowed the federal government to prepare complete financial statements.

Mazur’s contributions to professional organizations are also impressive. He currently is serving a five- year term on GASB and previously was a member of the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board.
