Article on New CPE Model Tops 1998 Field T he Journal of Accountancy presented its 1998 Lawler Award for best article of the year to Nita J. Clyde, CPA, for “CPE Is Broke; Let’s Fix It” (Dec.98, page 77). Clyde, a partner of Clyde Associates, an executive consulting firm in Dallas, is a member of the AICPA board of directors. She also chairs the CPE standards subcommittee and serves on the strategic planning committee. In the article, Clyde explained that the current CPE model addresses compliance rather than competency, and she called for new standards that focus more on the development of skills. Each year, the JofA’s editorial advisers choose the winning article, which earns its author $500 in cash and a commemorative plaque. The award is named after John L. Lawler, a former JofA editor and AICPA senior vice president.
