I would like to suggest the following additions to “Golden Rules of E-Mail” (JofA, Dec.98, page 8):
- When replying to e-mail, include the message from the sender when appropriate, editing out the irrelevant portions. Many people send out dozens of requests a day. They won’t know what a reply refers to if it answers just “Yes” or “Go ahead” and does not otherwise elaborate.
- Jokes, current events and SPAM often are forwarded numerous times. Scrolling through all the recipients is not only cumbersome but irrelevant in most cases. When numerous attachments must be opened to get to the original, it would be much nicer to forward just the original message.
