Are They Limiting Their Options?

In addition to the news item “In Search of Good CPAs” (JofA, May98, page 16), I have recently noticed numerous other references to problems organizations are having finding qualified personnel. Yet, I just got a very different picture from a career management seminar sponsored by the local society of CPAs.

For example, we were informed of the following:

  • Job prospects significantly decrease for people over the age of 35.
  • If you have held a position as an internal auditor for longer than a few years, employers will consider you for only that type of position.
  • Having an advanced degree, such as an MBA, will be considered valuable only if it is received from one of the top 20 schools.

Are employers unwittingly limiting their options, or are they really saying they only want qualified, talented people who happen to fit a narrow mold? Perhaps if those employers allowed their views about talent and qualifications to expand a little, they might find a more ample supply of potential employees.
