TECHNOLOGY

TRY BEFORE YOU FILE
www.tryxbrl.org
This collaboration between EDGAR Online, a business and financial information provider, and RR Donnelley, a print services company, can help you get up to speed on XBRL and interactive data. Track it in real time with the countdown clock, which ticks off the days, hours, minutes and seconds to an expected SEC preliminary ruling on XBRL. The “Learn” tab offers XBRL FAQs, including “What are the key benefits of XBRL?” and “What is XBRL US, Inc.?” and a handy glossary of related terms. The “Try” tab also lets registered users see their company’s financials in XBRL format.

PRESENT AND SHARE WITH EASE
www.authorstream.com
authorSTREAM lets you share PowerPoint presentations over the Web, converting uploaded presentations to Flash slideshows, while at the same time retaining all graphics, animation and sounds from the original files. Once uploaded, you can send the file’s unique URL in an e-mail or embed the file in any intranet page, blog or Web site. There’s also the option to share presentations via videosharing sites, such as YouTube, or through podcasts—just download, then view on a handheld device when out of the office. The service is free but requires a quick user registration.

PRODUCTIVITY UPGRADES
www.lifehacker.com
Who couldn’t use more “tech tricks, tips and downloads for getting things done”? The site publishes more than 20 tips per day, ranging from “Top 10 Email Productivity Boosters,” “Get More from Your RSS Reader by Oversubscribing” and “Commit a Habit to Paper to Break It,” plus everything in between. Each post is tagged by topic, such as motivation, project management, clutter, or featured download, which often highlights open source and free software for both Windows and Mac operating systems.

GENERAL INTEREST

STAY ON TOP OF IFRS
www.iasplus.com
For international accounting news, head straight to Deloitte’s IAS Plus. The site is fully searchable and offers detailed summaries and analyses of all standards and interpretations, comparisons of IFRS and more than a dozen local GAAPs, and links to hundreds of IFRS-related Web sites. International news is published on the home page, as well as in both quarterly and “special edition” newsletters, available through e-mail and RSS subscription (see “ Web Syndication Using RSS ,” page 48). Click “Deloitte IFRS e-Learning” to download more than 30 e-learning modules or use the right-side navigation bar to access IASB projects, meeting notes and future meeting dates.

INSIDE GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTING
http://aga.typepad.com
The Association of Government Accountants entered the blogosphere in April with this site, featuring commentary and dialogue from government financial management experts. Each weekday brings a new post on topics such as reporting and transparency, human capital management and accountability. The post’s author visits the site throughout the day to answer questions and comments from readers. Past bloggers on the site include Thomas J. Sadowski, CPA, CGFM, Missouri state controller; and Wendy M. Payne, CPA, CGFM, executive director of FASAB.

IMPROVING FINANCIAL HEALTH
www.financialfitness.org
Visit the home of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants’ award–winning “Financial Fitness” community service campaign. Developed in partnership with the AICPA’s 360 Degrees of Financial Literacy program, the site offers a complimentary “Financial Fitness Calendar,” which is available for download or in a hard copy by request (CPAs may order multiple copies for their clients or marketing efforts for a small fee). CPAs can also sign up for several community outreach services on the site, including a nonprofit pro bono assistance program and the “Ask a CPA” e-mail program. Click on “Get Involved” for details on volunteering for the Speakers Bureau.

SEARCH FOR KNOWLEDGE SIMPLIFIED
www.findingdulcinea.com
Billed as the “Librarian of the Internet,” this Smart Stop offers Web guides, which are narrated collections of topical information from a variety of sources. For example, the “Finance” guide features information on personal finances, financial news sources with links to online publications and blogs, retirement planning and more. The “Career” guide can help you research pay and benefits in your field, connect with your professional community through links to business-networking sites and organizations or associations, and learn about telecommuting or plan for a business trip.
