IRS PTIN Application System to Go Down for Maintenance

December 21, 2011

The IRS announced on its website that it will not be accepting new applications for preparer tax identification numbers (PTINs) from 5 p.m. EST Friday, Dec. 23, until approximately 6 a.m. EST on Monday, Jan. 9. The IRS PTIN system will be available for renewals during that time.

The IRS says the PTIN application system is being taken down for “previously scheduled maintenance.”

Under the IRS’ return preparer registration requirements, individuals (including CPAs) who are paid tax return preparers and who prepare all or substantially all of a tax return or claim for refund must obtain a PTIN in order to prepare 2011 tax returns. Both signing and nonsigning preparers are subject to the PTIN requirement.
