Stout Receives Accounting Education Award
August 2008

David E. Stout, Ph.D., received the 2008 Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education Award from the AICPA.

The award, presented by AICPA Chairman Randy Fletchall at the Institute’s spring Council meeting in Florida, recognizes full-time college accounting educators for excellence in teaching and for national prominence in the profession.

Stout is the John S. and Doris M. Andrews Professor of Accounting in the Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University in Ohio.

He has written more than 70 published articles, has co-authored a cost-management textbook, serves as senior associate editor of the J ournal of Accounting Education , and performs editorial reviews for numerous accounting journals.

Stout, the 2008–2009 president of the Ohio Region of the American Accounting Association (AAA), has also received the Ohio Outstanding Accounting Educator Award from the AAA; the R. Lee Brummet Award from the Institute of Management Accountants; the IMA Distinguished Service Award for Educators; and a distinguished teaching award from Youngstown State.

AICPA Public Service Awards Recognize Good Works
August 2008

Michael D. Shmerling of Tennessee and Schenck Business Solutions of Wisconsin each received the AICPA’s 2007 Public Service Award.

Shmerling, chairman of Choice Food Group and recipient of the award for an individual, served on the boards of prominent state and local organizations, including the Tennessee Performing Arts Center and the Tennessee Society of CPAs. He is founder and chairman of Abe’s Garden, a not-for-profit organization that is developing an Alzheimer’s and dementia facility. He also serves on the boards of Fisk University, Renewal House, The Hermitage, Monroe Carrell Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University, Nashville Alliance for Public Education, United Way of Metropolitan Nashville, and Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.

Schenck Business Solutions, recipient of the firm recognition award, was honored for its commitment to corporate citizenship. Shareholder Karin Gale accepted the award for Schenck.

Volunteerism is a key component of the performance evaluation for shareholders within the company and is encouraged among employees. The firm has supported the Greater Green Bay Women’s Fund, United Way of Waukesha County, Green Bay Habitat for Humanity, the Greater Milwaukee Area United Way, McKey Christmas Club, Junior Achievement and many others.

Einhorn Earns Tax Division's Distinguished Service Award
August 2008

Alan R. Einhorn, vice chairman of the AICPA Tax Executive Committee and a partner with Deloitte Tax LLP in Washington, D.C., received the AICPA Tax Division’s 2007–2008 Distinguished Service Award.

The award recognizes outstanding current contribution to the AICPA Tax Division. Jeffrey R. Hoops, chairman of the Tax Executive Committee, presented the award at the Tax Division’s spring meeting in New Orleans.

“Alan was an obvious choice for this year’s award,” said Tom Ochsenschlager, AICPA vice president–taxation. “The number of personal hours he dedicated to the AICPA Tax Division this year was phenomenal.”

Einhorn led a task force to help the AICPA’s efforts to change the law Congress passed in May 2007 that raised the tax return reporting standards for tax return preparers to a level higher than that required of taxpayers.

Patton Named to New Position
August 2008

The AICPA named Jeannie Patton, formerly CEO of the Utah Association of CPAs, to the newly created position of vice president–students, academics and membership.

She will oversee the Institute’s programs to recruit students into the profession, encourage accounting graduates to pass the CPA exam, serve the needs of young CPAs, and promote long-term retention of AICPA members.

Patton also will supervise the Institute’s annual survey, Trends in the Supply of Accounting Graduates and the Demand for Public Accounting Recruits , as well as initiatives directed toward women and minorities. She will also oversee the AICPA Foundation.

Patton reports to Anthony J. Pugliese, senior vice president–finance, membership and operations.

Student Awarded First AICPA and AICPA Foundation Scholarship
August 2008

Ashley Forte, a senior at Hillside High School in Durham, N.C., is the first of the school’s Finance Academy students to receive a scholarship sponsored by the AICPA and the AICPA Foundation.

Forte plans to study accounting and finance at the Calloway School of Accountancy at Wake Forest University in North Carolina.

“One of our goals is to help promising students realize their dream of pursuing an accounting career,” said Victor Velazquez, vice president–member service and operations, who presented the scholarship to Forte. “People like Ashley serve as important role models for their fellow students.”

The AICPA partners with Hillside High School’s Finance Academy to review and update curricula with finance and accounting course materials and to encourage students to consider careers in accounting and improve their financial literacy.
