Workshop Focuses on Future
T he Institute’s Minority Initiatives Committee hosted the 13th annual AICPA Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop in June in Peachtree City, Ga.
About 90 accounting students from across the country attended the workshop, which had the theme “CPAs: Leaders in Action.”

The committee was established in 1969 to encourage minorities to become accounting students, provide educational opportunities to prepare them to enter the profession, and encourage the hiring of minorities. Genevia Gee Fulbright, CPA, is chairwoman of the committee.

During the sessions, volunteer CPAs and other professionals with diverse backgrounds gave motivational speeches about their professional experiences and offered students a sneak peek at career opportunities in auditing, assurance, taxes, controllership, forensics, judgeships, business coaching and more.

“The AICPA workshops were so inspiring. I have learned so much about a career as an accountant, and I look forward to becoming a great professional,” said a student from the University of Massachusetts.

The participants also created financial-literacy games and activities for high school students on credit card smarts, budgeting, long-term planning and saving, and college financing. The projects were judged during the workshop, and the top presentation on each topic will be available to high schools, free of charge, later this year.
