Wisdom On Password Risk

By Stanley Zarowin
April 2004
In the February JofA , I responded to a reader’s query about how to set his Internet browser so it would store selected Web site passwords. Several readers took me to task for failing to issue a warning that such a practice can be risky. I concede the practice is risky, but it’s a trade-off against convenience. However, I certainly would never set my browser to store passwords in a laptop, which is mobile and therefore more vulnerable to loss and public exposure. And there are some passwords, such as bank and security account codes, that always should be kept as secure as possible. So be advised.
