The AICPA announced the winners of the Elijah Watt Sells awards for the Uniform CPA Examination held in November 1999. Elizabeth Kinney, of Jersey City, New Jersey, a senior resident lead instructor for the IRS, took the gold medal. Kinney received the highest score of the 70,000 candidates.
Kinney has served in various positions with the IRS, where she started as a co-op college student. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Pace University and a master’s degree in taxation from Long Island University.
The Sells silver and bronze medals for second and third places went to Adrian Grant Simmons of Laurel, Maryland, a recent intern with KPMG, and Hans Peter Bork, a tax partner of BDO in Dusseldorf, Germany.
The Sells Award, instituted in 1923 and presented twice a year by the AICPA, recognizes the contributions to the accounting profession of Elijah Watt Sells, a founding partner of Haskins & Sells, a predecessor of Deloitte & Touche LLP. Sells was one of the first CPAs licensed under a New York state law enacted in 1896 and played an active role in the creation of the AICPA.
